Building Tomorrow’s Artists and Audiences – One Program at a Time

Camp Day 1 175

By Shelina Elyse

At The Phoenix Theatre Company, we believe theatre is more than entertainment – it’s a powerful tool for building community. Through our patrons’ generous support, we are able to extend that belief beyond the stage with Summer Camp, the Professional Apprenticeship Program, and Community Nights. These programs reach people where they are, offering opportunities, access, and a sense of belonging. They create ripple effects that strengthen not only individuals but the entire fabric of our community.

Camp Day 1 154Where Every Child Has a Place in the Spotlight

Inclusivity is a guiding principle for our Summer Camp and Youth Musical Theatre Classes. The programs are intentionally designed to be a space where every child, regardless of background, ability, or experience level, can feel safe and celebrated. We are also committed to economic accessibility. Our financial assistance program, funded by donors and community partners, ensures that cost never hinders participation.

All our staff members have experience in the arts and working with children. Through our partnership with SAARC (Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center), we enhanced our ability to welcome neurodivergent students into the world of performing arts. Sessions end in a live performance, allowing young artists to showcase their hard work for family and friends in a celebration of storytelling and stage magic. It’s heartwarming to see students forge connections and uplift each other through their shared experiences. Our hope is that all children know they belong in every space they enter, and they carry this feeling and acceptance of others beyond theatre.

Training the Next Generation

Each season, we welcome a carefully selected group of apprentices to become part of the artistic heartbeat of Arizona’s largest producing regional theatre. With an emphasis on real-world application and professional mentorship, this immersive program serves as a launchpad from studying theatre to a professional career.

What sets our Professional Apprenticeship Program apart is its commitment to professional development. Apprentices work under the guidance of seasoned industry professionals to refine their skills and explore the inner workings of professional theatre, all while creating a vital network that extends far beyond Phoenix. It’s more than a program. It’s a bridge between dreams and professional artistry.

Live Theatre, Open to All

Community Nights, also known as Pay-What-You-Can performances, is a long-standing program to make theatre accessible to all. These special performances ensure that financial barriers don’t stand in the way of experiencing the magic of live theatre.

We’ve welcomed veterans, first responders, and groups like Sojourner Center, Black Girl Brown Girl Collective, One-N-Ten, Gigi’s Playhouse, and A New Leaf to our productions. We’re so grateful for the support of our donors to help continue this community building program.

These initiatives are more than performances or training opportunities; they are pathways to confidence for young people, runways for emerging artists, and open doors to the community.
