About the Show

A story of redemption, second chances, and the power of human kindness, A Christmas Carol is a musical journey through the heart of one man’s transformation. On one fateful Christmas Eve, Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by three ghosts who guide him through his Past, Present, and Future, leading him to discover the true spirit of Christmas. Featuring a stirring score by The Phoenix Theatre Company’s late Music Director, Alan Ruch, and direction by Matthew Wiener, who helmed A Christmas Carol at Actors Theatre for 19 years, this production continues a beloved holiday tradition. Celebrate nearly two decades of magic, music, and storytelling in this cherished classic.

This production includes theatrical fog, haze, loud rumbling, and flashing light effects. This production contains some narrative elements, including ghosts and the fragility of life, that could be disturbing for younger audience members.

Reviews

With its strong direction, compelling performances, and thoughtful revisions to the beloved story, Phoenix Theatre Company's production of A Christmas Carol offers a heartfelt and engaging holiday experience. It pays tribute to Dickens' beloved story of redemption while offering fresh ways to illuminate its message of compassion, generosity, and second chances.
Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway
The late Alan Ruch’s pleasant original score plus some classic holiday tunes cleverly interwoven are wonderful to hear again. The novel story approach which trims many details from Dickens’ source by adapters Michael Grady and Wiener has also been reinvigorated. It all couldn’t be better.
Chris Curcio, Curtain Up Phoenix
Lauran Stanis’s choreography animates the large ensemble with buoyant movement, yielding energetic tableaux that heighten the festive tone.
Herbert Paine, Broadway World
A lovely bonus in the show is the trio for the Miner, the Nurse, and the Helmsman, whose harmonies create one of the most beautiful musical highlights in the score due to the superb musical performances by Teddy Ladley, Trisha Ditsworth, and Connor Dunning.
Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway
The Fezziwig scenes provide some of the production’s most exuberant moments, led by D. Scott Withers, whose portrayal of the jovial patriarch is full-throated, jubilant, and irresistibly magnetic. He is well matched by Shani Barrett as Mrs. Fezziwig.
Herbert Paine, Broadway World
The pairing of "What Child Is This?" with "Silent Night" is another standout, led by Bunting and rich with gorgeous vocal blending from the entire cast that enhances the show's emotional resonance under Kevin Robert White's stirring music direction; the 11-piece orchestra sounds fantastic playing Craig Bohmler's sweeping orchestrations.
Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway
As Ebenezer Scrooge, popular local performer Rusty Ferracane tackles a very different type of role and does it with a “bah humbugging” flourish. He starts inward and is unwilling to credit anyone until the end when he becomes a jubilant celebrant of the Yule season.
Chris Curcio, Curtain Up Phoenix
Ferracane’s performance allows the eventual transformation to feel earned rather than inevitable. His scenes with Bob Cratchit (a gentle and grounded Matravius Avent) underscore the tension between callousness and conscience that drives the narrative forward.
Herbert Paine, Broadway World
As Scrooge, Rusty Ferracane offers a textured performance, capturing both bitterness and vulnerability. By the time Scrooge is confronted with the bleakness of what lies ahead, his transformation into a man eager to embrace kindness feels fully earned in Ferracane's fleshed out portrayal.
Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway
Historically flowing costumes and fast-moving sets enhance the staging as do Craig Bohmler’s sharp orchestrations and music director Kevin Robert White who turns the musical numbers into splashy holiday magic.
Chris Curcio, Curtain Up Phoenix
Stephen Gifford's set is impressive, using several moving pieces and a large and always present clock-face motif, along with the imaginative video designs of Nathan W. Scheuer that quickly establish both the realistic settings and the ghostly environs.
Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway
Bob Cratchit is played with sincerity and steady optimism by Matravius Avent. Jane Bunting is simply lovely as Mrs. Cratchit, and her expanded role anchors several emotional moments which adds depth to the Cratchit family dynamic.
Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway
The impressive lighting by Jared Sayeg helps to define each supernatural visit, from the soft glow of Christmas Past to the vibrant colors of Christmas Present and the dark domains of Christmas yet to be. Maci Hosler's costumes are richly detailed and period appropriate, adding color, texture, and vibrancy.
Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway
Eddie Maldonado's Marley is portrayed with chilling conviction, delivering a performance full of urgency. Johanna Carlisle-Zepeda's Ghost of Christmas Past is gentle, fun, and ethereal, while the Ghost of Christmas Present radiates warmth and generosity in Geoff Belliston's rich portrayal. As Scrooge's earnest nephew Fred, Kendrick Stallings provides buoyant energy.
Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway
Ultimately, A CHRISTMAS CAROL succeeds as wholesome, energetic, celebratory entertainment. It is a [...] polished and heartfelt seasonal production that reflects both the artistic legacy of its creators and the communal spirit of the holiday.
