About the Show

The golden age of Hollywood comes alive in Tenderly: The Rosemary Clooney Musical, a heartfelt tribute to one of America’s most beloved voices. This intimate and powerful musical takes audiences beyond the spotlight, revealing Clooney’s meteoric rise to fame, her struggles behind the scenes, and her triumphant comeback. Featuring timeless classics like “Come On-a My House”, “Hey There”, “Mambo Italiano”, “Sisters”, and “Tenderly,” this stunning production captures the music, the magic, and the resilience of a true legend. 

This show contains the use of e-cigarettes, depictions of drug addiction, gunshot sound effects, and adult themes. All shows may contain adult themes or mature content. Patron discretion is recommended.

There is much to praise here, starting with the casting of Gina Guarino as Clooney. ...Guarino does not just stop and sing a song; she lives it.

Jodie Weiss' direction keeps the pacing tight and the music direction by Stephen Kuebelbeck derives a lovely sound from the small on-stage orchestra. The creative elements, including Douglas Clarke's set design and the lighting by Nathaniel White are simple yet effective. Masi Hosler's costumes are period perfect, and Avant Johnston's wigs depict Clooney's signature style. The sound design by Chris Neumeyer ensures the vocals are clear and crisp.

Tony Blosser played Doc as well as other characters in Clooney’s life...He shined as Dante DiPaolo, Clooney’s early lover and final husband, as he danced and sang with her to “Botcha-a-Me” (Eddie Stanley/Luigi Astore) and “Mambo Italiano” (Bob Merrill). ... Their duo version of “Sway” (Norman Gimbel/Pablo Betltrân Ruiz) was a highlight.

The Phoenix Theatre Company displays the story lovingly with master interpreter Gina Guarino capturing Clooney’s musical style and sound as she flawlessly performs Clooney’s famous songs but Guarino also artfully represents Clooney’s mannerisms, expressions, arm thrusts, and the way she threw her blonde hair about.

Another performer is also part of the show with Tony Blosser playing her psychiatrist but also essaying several big stars Clooney worked with and her sister, Betty, who was part of Clooney’s premiere act when she began her career near her Kentucky birthplace. Blosser with a wave of a hat, or a minimalist prop transforms into these various personalities with ease and aplomb.

Douglas Clarke’s set design was anchored by what looked like a quilted background and was in perfect synch with Nathaniel White’s lighting. It made for a period nightclub, home, and radio station and integrated the three musicians.
