Board of Directors

A Welcome from our Board President

OK, it’s 1920.  Jazz was the music of popular choice, Gershwin was king and the Charleston was the dance.  Talking pictures has just come on the scene and Woodrow Wilson was POTUS.  Arizona was eight years old, and Phoenix Theatre was born. That’s right, Phoenix Theatre is beginning its 89th year, a claim very few organizations can make in this extraordinary and quite wonderful city.

Some call Phoenix a big town (in fact, most anyone from the east coast does) but it is, in fact, a city.  A distinction without a difference?  Not when Webster says a “city is an inhabited place more important than a town.”  And Phoenix Theatre is This City’s Theatre.

Why theatre at all?

We offer theatre not just so we can all relax,
not just so we can have fun,
but so we will, perhaps, recognize beauty more easily,
so we will gain a greater measure of sensibility,
so we can see that a problem may have more than one solution,
so we can celebrate multiple perspectives of the world,
so we can learn to communicate better through imagery,
so we can feel, have more love, more compassion, more gentleness, more goodness, more life.

Theatre is about nothing less than these things.

A great season awaits, and we hope you will embrace it, enjoy it, and come back often.
